Writer's Guidelines
OnEarth publishes investigative journalism, in-depth profiles, provacative essays, thoughtful blog posts, book reviews, photo essays, and multimedia features on a wide range of environmental topics, both in our magazine and online at OnEarth.org. The print edition publishes quarterly; our website is updated every weekday.
Our editors will accept queries from professional journalists and authors only. Stories should be appropriate for an educated, general readership. We prefer original, not simultaneous, submissions. We do not consider fiction or technical or academic reports, and we are not interested in corporate or public relations pitches.
Authors should submit a pitch of no more than 500 words in length. Please do not send full-length manuscripts. If you haven’t worked with us before, include your resume and links to three published clips. We prefer queries that demonstrate familiarity with our publication, its focus on sound science and strong storytelling, and the issues of importance to our readers. We're looking mainly for pieces with a powerful narrative, compelling characters, a clear takeaway message, and a fresh point of view. You should endeavor to demonstrate all of those, as well as your writing ability, in your pitch.
Please submit queries through our contact form or via email.
If you're an aspiring nature photographer, you can also enter our long-running "Show Us Your Nature" photo contest for a shot at having your picture published in our print magazine.
And finally, if you're just a fan and want to show us your love, you can follow OnEarth on Facebook, Tumblr, or Twitter. We'll love you back!
