If the coal industry had its way, liquid coal -- solid coal converted into liquid fuel -- would replace gasoline. In Crude Substitute: The Folly of Liquid Coal, a short film produced by NRDC, the absurdity of such a plan is laid out by NRDC experts and even former CIA director James Woolsey. The film’s blunt, vivid message: producing liquid coal emits more global warming pollution than producing gasoline, and the process of removing whole mountaintops to access coal devastates landscapes and communities. The film spotlights residents of Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, home of the first proposed U.S. liquid coal plant.
