Covert Operation

A smuggled terrorist nuclear device made with highly enriched uranium poses the greatest risk of mass destruction to the United States, assert NRDC nuclear experts Thomas Cochran and Matthew McKinzie in the April issue of Scientific American. The duo tells the story of working with an ABC News team to successfully smuggle depleted uranium, a surrogate for the highly enriched variety, past radiation detectors at U.S. ports.
