Look! Up in the Sky!

by Molly Webster

This time, it’s not your imagination: that cloud really does look like the Olympic rings. That's because the cloud is actually a Flogo -- a floating advertisement made of bubbles. Reminiscent of ocean seafoam, Flogos are made mostly of helium and an eco-friendly, soap-based substance. They can be made to soar up to 20,000 feet, fly for 30 miles, and maintain their shape for an hour; at which point, they disintegrate without causing environmental harm. Flogos (flogos.net) are the brainchild of two bubble-loving special-effects guys in Alabama (one of whom is a former magician). Their creations have captured people's imaginations, and not just the ubiquitous symbol of summer in Beijing: NBC logos, peace signs, and Mickey Mouse have all been spotted floating around up there.
