No Child Left Inside

by Wendee Holtcamp

In his recent best seller, Last Child in the Woods,  Richard Louv drew national attention to the "nature deficit disorder" afflicting American children. Now legislators are picking up on the idea. Senator Jack Reed of Rhode Island and Representative John Sarbanes of Maryland have introduced the No Child Left Inside bill (H.R. 3036; S. 1981), which would authorize $500 million over five years for environmental and outdoor education programs, teacher training, and curriculum development.

I am so thrilled to hear the support that is happening for No Child Left Inside. I have taught for 25 years and have endeavored to have as much outdoor education as possible with my students. I now work with special needs students and have seen how students who have learning disabilities, autistism,ADHD, and other special needs flourish in outdoor settings.
Unfortunately I have no funding for field trip or any special projects and would love to hear from anyone who can guide me as to how I can be involved.
I have ten more years to teach and I want these last ten years to be most meaningful one. I am prepared to move, take training, write grants, whatever it takes to be involved with this movemnet.
I worked with Joseph Cornell, author of Sharing Nature with Children, for many years and I have many skills and talents that would be perfect for working in a natural setting with children.
Please contact me at shoshanal@comcast.net with any leads or suggestions of how I can become involved.
    Thank you.
