Spring 2009: Transportation, Solar Power, Smart Living

Transportation

The advent of high-speed rail in the United States could help us get around faster while emitting less CO2, reports Craig Canine ("On the Fast Track," page 38). Until then, NRDC encourages businesses to offer their employees incentives, such as mass transit vouchers, to use cleaner forms of transportation.

Solar Power

It looks like solar's Time has come, reports Michael Behar in this issue's cover story ("Selling the Sun," page 26). In December the California Air Resources Board concluded that in order to implement Assembly Bill 32 - a climate change bill spearheaded by NRDC - 33 percent of California's electricity will have to come from renewable sources, including thousands of megawatts of solar power, by 2020. Smart Living

Hillary Rosner visits A tricked-out SmartGrid home for this issue's Living Green ("Why, What a Smart Grid You Have!" page 23). In the report Lowering the Cost of Play, NRDC suggests that one way of wising up our homes is to redesign video gaming consoles, such as the Xbox 360, by wiring them to shut down automatically when not in use.
