NRDC works on many of the issues covered in the magazine by independent journalists. Check out what we're doing on:
Wind Power
Bill Moore wasn't the only one with a smile on his face when New York State's Maple Ridge Wind Farm went into operation "Falling in Love With Wind," by Joseph D'Agnese. NRDC worked with New York State legislators to develop the renewable energy requirements that made the project economically feasible. Mountaintop Mining
As Erik Reece bluntly states in "Appalachian Apocalypse," mountaintop removal mining "is the most ruthless method yet found to extract coal as quickly and as cheaply as possible." NRDC attorneys are using the Clean Water Act as a legal tool in the fight against this destructive practice. In 2002, the organization filed suit against the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for authorizing the disposal of surface mining waste in valley streams -- precisely what coal mining companies do when they hack off Appalachian mountaintops. That case is ongoing, and in the meantime, NRDC is lending its support to a new bill called the Clean Water Protection Act, which would ban valley fills altogether. Public Health
Linda Greer, director of NRDC's public health program, combines her expertise in toxicology with her advocacy work in her role on the National Academy of Sciences committee on toxicogenomics, the new field of science described in "Looking Deep, Deep Into Our Genes".
