Wells Fargo's Split Personality

image of author

Wells Fargo BankThe banking and financial-services giant Wells Fargo made its reputation on the lawless roads of the Wild West. Today, driven perhaps by this same frontier spirit, the company bankrolls the destructive coal-mining practice known as mountaintop removal. Recent Wells Fargo investments include two $175 million loans to Massey Energy and Alpha Natural Resources, which operate dozens of "surface mines" throughout the Appalachian states. But here's a strange thing: According to the Environmental Protection Agency's latest survey of green power usage, Wells Fargo relied on renewable energy (in this case wind power) for a staggering 550 million kilowatt hours of electricity, more than any other corporation. As U.S. businesses look to a greener future, one malady they will need to cure may be schizophrenia.
