A very similar situation happened in my area (Hudson Valley) with a cement company called Holcim (sound it out--hilarious, right?) aka St. Lawrence Cement, a few years before I moved here. The community worked together to fight them (and the oh-so-wise city bureaucrats who were in their pockets) off, but it was, by all accounts, a long, hard battle.
