We are happy to announce the winners of our new "You're OnEarth" photo contest for Fall 2012:
1st Place Winner: Niels Brix Hornbek
Camera: Canon PowerShot G7
About the Photo: After a day spent scuba diving in the Red Sea, Hornbek came across a fever of blue-spotted rays under a boat dock on the coastline of southern Egypt. He says sneaking up on the stingrays without their whipping away was challenging, but he was able to come ashore with a few good shots, including this one.
Hornbek won a trip for two to a Caravan Tours destination of his choosing -- Costa Rica, Guatemala, the Canadian Rockies, the Grand Canyon, Nova Scotia, New England -- valued up to $5,000.

2nd Place Winner: Patty Harrigan
Camera: Nikon D80, using a 24-200mm Nikkor lens
About the Photo: Patty Harrigan says the yacht that carried her through the Northwest Passage last September was only the 159th vessel ever to complete the route. Though the melting of the Arctic ice sheet allowed this voyage to take place, Harrigan did see many icebergs along the way. She snapped this beauty in Croker Bay, Canada.
Harrigan won a pair of Vanguard Endeavor ED binoculars, valued at $425.
How YOU Could Win: Share your best photographs of life on earth with us: images of wildlife habitat, but also human habitat and wherever the two meet (harmoniously or inharmoniously). We're looking for scenes with a strong visual point of view, attitude, and, of course, beauty.
