A new panda came into the world on Sunday at the San Diego Zoo -- much to the delight of zookeepers, who hadn’t been sure if mama Bai Yun was experiencing a pseudo-pregnancy (common for pandas) until almost birth time. Surprise! Bai Yun is no faker. And for a type of bear that often makes us think it was absent the day evolution handed out parenting skills, Bai Yun is a pro. The 20-year-old bear has delivered six cubs so far, making her the most prolific panda producer ever in the breeding program for the endangered species, outside of China. (She’s also one of the oldest.) Go Mama!
OK, let’s get to the video already, shall we? This is the first good look zoo staff got of the new cub, and they were thrilled with what they saw: a squeaky furball wiggling around on a fat belly. Um yeah, who wouldn't be happy with that? But adorable aesthetics aside, the panda's pudge and squawks show that it's well fed, energetic, and misses mama's pro snuggling. Go baby! (Hang in there.)
