LISTEN: A Sturgeon Warning

OnEarth contributor Bruce Stutz appeared on WNYC’s Leonard Lopate Show yesterday. His feature story “Creature of the Deep” -- from our Winter 2012 issue -- discusses the uncertain fate of the sturgeon, a mysterious fish that has swum the Earth’s rivers, lakes, and seas for 85 million years.
“They survived the mass extinction of the dinosaurs. They survived the moving of the continents. They survived the glaciations. They’ve survived through pretty much everything,” Stutz tells Lopate. “They are a pretty extraordinary species.”
The question now is whether sturgeon will survive the impacts of pollution, habitat loss, and of course, humanity’s cravings for caviar.
