Opinions and observations from environmental experts, activists, and luminaries
It is high time that something be done to stop the bloodshed in eastern Congo where the fighting over conflict minerals has left 5 milion dead in a dozen years. But blaming consumers and manufacturers of electronics may not be the right answer. Since eastern Congo only provides a small portion of these minerals, most companies are refusing to deal with that region. This creates a huge black market and leaves the estimated 2 million miners unemployed and more desperate than ever. For an in-depth look at the situation, see the book, Consuming the Congo: War and Conflict Minerals in the World's Deadliest Place (Lawrence Hill Books).
Dear Anonymous, Thank you very much for your concern regarding this matter and the economic difficulties in the Congo, as well as for your book suggestion. I seek to address this matter in my subsequent blog post for my course at Barnard College called Environmental Leadership, Ethics, and Action. It can be found here: http://edblogs.columbia.edu/scppx3335-001-2011-3/2011/10/19/dodd-frank-hits-the-congo/ Best, Shelby
