Notes on waste, water, and whatever from the author of Bottlemania and Garbage Land
this article veered from rechargeable batteries to the disposition of lead batteries. where DO the rechargeable batteries go?
Rechargeables brought to chain stores that partner with the Rechargable Battery Recycling Corporation are shipped to plants that break them apart, and melt or smelt or vaporize them into their metal constituents (nickel, cadmium, lead, etc.), then sell those materials to other manufacturers. In the East, batteries go to Inmetco (www.inmetco.com), a recycler based outside Pittsburgh. For information on recycling batteries and cell phones in other regions, visit www.call2recycle.org.
