On the May 17 edition of GritTV, I joined fellow guest Kieran Suckling of the Center for Biological Diversity to talk about the politics of the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico with host Laura Flanders.
The segment kicked off with President Obama's unusually harsh words, which he delivered late last week, for the Minerals Management Service (MMS), the branch of the Interior Department that regulates offshore drilling. Then we chewed over the potential for real reform at the MMS. (Me: Wait-and-see attitude. Kieran: Flat-out disdain.)
We also touched on the latest findings about the gusher's enviromental impacts, including the discovery of enormous plumes of oil deep in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, as well as the high likelihood that petro-goo will reach the Florida Keys and the Gulf Stream current traveling along the Eastern seaboard -- as reported here at OnEarth last week.
