Internships
OnEarth magazine is the editorially independent, award-winning publication of the Natural Resources Defense Council. The magazine is published quarterly. The staff is small, so interns work closely with senior editors on all aspects of magazine production.
Responsibilities include pitching and writing short news items for our Frontlines and Dispatches sections, as well as fact-checking and proofreading. Under the supervision of senior staff, interns are responsible for the production of the letters page and the contributors page, including writing, editing, fact-checking, proofreading, photo-sourcing, and copy-fitting as appropriate. Interns are also invited to sit in on story meetings and article critiques with senior staff. Additional responsibilities include pitching and producing content for OnEarth.org.
Hours are generally 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The pay is $15 per hour, and interns will work one to three days per week in the summer and fall; two days per week in the spring.
All of your work will be journalistic in nature; you will not be involved in fundraising, media relations, or other p.r. work. Duties include:
- Writing short (under 350 words) environmental news items for OnEarth magazine's "Frontline" section.
- Writing short pieces about NRDC researchers/lawyers etc. for the magazine's "Dispatches" section.
- Writing longer feature stories and blog posts for OnEarth.org.
- Doing traditional magazine intern work, including fact checking, copy editing etc.
- Observing all aspects of the magazine production schedule.
- There may also be opportunities for some video or audio storytelling for the web.
To apply, e-mail you resume and clips to onearth@nrdc.org with "Internship" in the subject line.
