Several years ago, I started a project called Explore. Through fact-finding missions to identify potential grant recipients, the Explore team gets an inside look at how non-profits work to alleviate global social problems in the areas of animal rights, health and human services, poverty, the environment, education and spirituality.
Explore.org showcases the knowledge gained through these travels, organized into an online library of philanthropy, consisting of short documentary films, photographic galleries, and interviews with the inspirational local leaders.
Over the course of my travels, I’ve found more than inspirational people whose selfless work is worthy of a broader audience. I’ve also experienced a renewed sense of calm on these voyages, and that too is worth sharing. Explore’s newest project, Zen Den, celebrates nature and its power to heal the soul. It is for those who wish to escape the urban squalor of everyday life and take in the serenity of our beloved planet.
The first in this series, Power of the Sea, captures the peaceful tranquility of the Arctic landscape. Drift along with the icebergs ... then close your eyes and breath deeply, thanking Nature for the selfless beauty it provides us every day.
Our multimedia portal brings individuals together as a collective voice that celebrates and encourages selfless acts of giving. Over time, I will chronicle our environmental expeditions and thinking here on Greenlight; if you would like to see our other work, please visit us at www.explore.org.

...Charles Annenberg Weingarten is a filmmaker, philanthropist, and storyteller. He is also a trustee of the Annenberg Foundation, through which he founded an organization called Explore. Explore identifies selfless individuals who are making a positive social impact through non-profit organizations and initiatives -- and then shares their stories through short documentary films and photography. In all, Explore has supported more than 100 non-profit organizations through grants from Annenberg Foundation.
Charles has always pursued broad interests in philanthropy, the arts, global spirituality, and communication. In 2003, recognizing the importance of social networking on the web, Charles established the Online Communities Program of the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Southern California (USC). He has long been an avid supporter of and advocate for independent media. Before starting Explore, he wrote and directed several films that were featured in various film festivals. Charles holds a Master's degree from USC's School of Cinema-Television and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Duke University.
